The Tenerife Tourism Corporation has looked back on 2007 and what it has meant for travel to the Canary Island, with some 1.3 million visitors welcomed already this year.

Tenerife receives 45 per cent of the total number of British tourists that holiday in the Canaries and a 31 per cent rate of visitor return, with 80 per cent of these people staying in five-star hotels.

This year the island will host the Association of British Travel Agents' (Abta) Travel Convention, which the tourism corporation said would be a "major highlight" of the year.

It will be ten years since the last Abta convention was hosted in Tenerife and this year's event will be held in the Magma Arts and Congress Centre in Costa Adeje.

A number of initiatives to improve the sustainability of tourism have been introduced on the Canary Island in recent years, including a code of conduct to regulate whale watching, a popular activity that is enjoyed by nearly one in ten visitors to Tenerife.

Half of the island is classed as either national park or nature reserve, including the Teide National Park, which is home to the Mount Teide volcano.

Looking forward to 2008, the Tenerife Tourism Corporation said that Siam Park, the biggest water theme park in Europe, is set to open to visitors and the Ladies Open Golf Championship will once again be held on the island.
