Spain Holds Witch Burning
Expat property owners join in as the town of Petrer celebrates its fiesta in traditional style, but no witches will be harmed.
One of the reasons many expats are relocating to inland Spain is because they love Spanish culture. Expats in the area of Petrer and Elda will be able to take a step back in time this weekend when the town holds its 'medieval festival'. These are popular in Alicante province, and stallholders and townsfolk dress up and enjoy a weekend of medieval revelry, complete with falconry and displays of traditional crafts. Even modern resorts like Torrevieja have them.
During the daytime there'll be a market selling traditional hand-made items (so you can get your Christmas shopping started early if you're there). There will also be parades and games for children, and on Saturday night there'll be a massive 'witch burning' firework display.
In the issue 126 of Spanish Homes we'll be travelling inland from Alicante to Petrer and Elda, so look out for that issue if you'd like to learn a little more about the towns.
